Background

Uruwela is a family run tea garden and processing center, established in 1920 by Don A Wanigasekara, and is currently managed by the third generation of the family.  It is situated in the Ruhuna tea growing district, at an elevation of 165feet above sea level, and has consistently produced exceptional quality, award winning teas. Its proximity to the sea and the warm sea breeze over the tea fields influence the liquor, lending it a distinctive robustness and caramel, honey notes.
Uruwela has over 1,000 smallholder tea growers supplying quality green leaf. The processing center and the plantation employs close to a 1,000 workers and supports it’s supplier smallholders by way of soft loans, subsidized fertilizer and bereavement allowances.
